White Crater Tourism in Ciwidey Bandung

White Crater is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Bandung. Located in Ciwidey, West Java, approximately 50 KM south of Bandung, Kawah Putih is a lake formed by the eruption of Mount Patuha. As the name implies, the soil in this region is white as a result of mixing sulfur elements. In addition to the white soil, Kawah Putih lake water also has a greenish-white color and can change color according to the sulfur content contained, temperature, and weather.

History of Ciwidey White Crater

About in the 10th century where there was a great eruption by Mount Patuha. After this eruption, many people assumed that this location was a haunted area because every bird that flew past the area would die. Over time, the belief about the haunted place began to fade, until finally in 1837 a botanist with German nationality came to this area to do research. The researcher named Dr. Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn was very interested in the quiet mountainous area where there were not even birds flying over him, so he toured the village in search of information. At that time, all the information he got was that the kasawan was haunted and inhabited by spirits.

For Dr. Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, the statement of the local community does not make sense. Because he did not believe these stories, he went into the jungle to find out what was there. Long story short, finally Dr. Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn made it to the top of the mountain, and from there he saw the existence of a beautiful white lake with a strong sulfuric odor.

And since then, the existence of Ciwidey Kawah Putih became famous and starting from 1987 the government developed this area as a tourist spot that offers a unique experience of seeing a lake that can change color.

The Route to the White Crater

Kawah Putih which is located on Jalan Raya Soreang Ciwidey KM 25 is located not far from the tourist site Situ Patenggang and can be reached easily if you bring a private vehicle because there are many road guides. From Jakarta, you only need to use the Cipularang toll lane and exit through the Kopo toll gate. From there you must head to Soreang and drive south to Ciwidey.

And if you use public transportation, you can take an angkot from Leuwi Panjang terminal that goes to Ciwidey terminal. From the Ciwidey terminal, you can use an angkot that goes to Situ Patenggang and get off in front of the White Crater Gate.

Ticket prices for Ciwidey White Crater

The price of admission to the Kawah Putih on weekdays and holidays and weekends is the same at IDR 15,000 per person. As for vehicle rates are as follows:

Top parking (car): 150,000 Rupiah

Top parking (motorbike): 35,000 Rupiah

Ontang-earring: 13,000 Rupiah

Parking under (car): 6,000 Rupiah

Parking under (motorbike): 5,000 Rupiah

Lower parking (bus): 25,000 Rupiah

The purpose of parking above is to bring your vehicle to the location of the crater, the bus cannot park above. The purpose of parking below is to park your vehicle at the entrance and then you can ride on the earrings to get to the crater.

Are those earrings? Ontang-earring comes from the Sundanese language which means 'back and forth' and is a term for a typical vehicle of the White Crater Ciwidey. This vehicle is a mini bus that has been modified to be open and equipped with safety. The maximum capacity for one earring is 12 people, but don't worry about not getting anywhere because there are many ontang earrings operating in this area.

Travel Tips to the Crater White Ciwidey

So that your tour to the White Crater is more comfortable, consider the following tips:

Cold temperatures does not mean you are safe from the sun, use sunblock before activating in the White Crater.

• If you are not strong with the smell of sulfur, under the mask. If you don't have a mask, you can buy it on location.
• Do not be too long in the crater because it can make your breathing disrupted, you can go up briefly to the top and then return to the crater if you still want to see views of the White Crater.
• If your group consists of a few people, you should park the vehicle at the gate and then continue using ontang-earrings because it is cheaper, besides that with ontang-earrings you can enjoy the view of the mountain debt clearly.
