History of Saung
Angklung Udjo
Saung Angklung Udjo was
founded by a Sundanese artist known as Mang Udjo. His real name is Udjo
Ngalagena. During the initial establishment, he founded and managed this place
together with his wife. The initial vision of the founding of the gazebo was to
preserve Sundanese culture and traditional arts.
Mang Udjo is an
angklung artist from West Java. He was born on March 5, 1929. Since a very
young age, he has been familiar with the art of angklung. In fact he said, he
played angklung since the age of 4 years. It is this association of all ages
that might make Mang Udjo see angklung, not just as an art game, but rather in
a way of life.
On the basis of that
great love, with the support of his wife, he later founded Saung Angklung Udjo
in 1966.
Mang Udjo died on May
3, 2001. After Mang Udjo's death, Saung Angklung Udjo did not just stop. His
10-years old son apparently inherited the Angklung way of life.
The fruit does not fall
far from the tree. That is roughly the saying that describes how Mang Udjo's
children inherit the same love and dedication power as their late parents.
Until now, Saung
Angklung Udjo still stands to educate visitors about Sundanese arts and
culture. There, visitors will be presented with the beauty of the environment
while trying angklung musical instruments.
It could be said saung
angklung udjo bandung is a conservation site for Sundanese culture, especially
angklung. But not just conservation in the sense of just survival, this site
also promotes innovation to ground angklung among the younger generation. This
can be seen from the selection of songs during an orchestra performance.
Today's song selection is a smart innovation to bring the ancient culture of
angklung into the modern world of young people.
